Planning is the best key to staying motivated. As I look back at every major achievement in recent years, it is very apparent a lot of the success I have had is a direct result of thorough planning. Nothing kills motivation like the feeling of being overwhelmed. When I feel overwhelmed I know I can rely on my planning to guide me to my goals.
Write down your goals, as I have mentioned before I’m a bit obsessed with writing lists so this is my favorite part of planning. Once you have your goals on paper, go through them and break them up into smaller goals until they become so small that they don’t seem so scary.
I have also found that I am more likely to keep on track if I tell someone about my goals. Having someone check up on you keeps you on your toes and stay motivated. You can also send yourself a motivational e-mail in advance for you to receive at a later date.
When you write down these goals, take 5-10 minutes and really think about how you will achieve them. This really helps in the long run and I find I am less overwhelmed when I have a clear idea of what I am doing and I feel much more confident. If you start to feel overwhelmed I find it useful to talk to someone, nothing is ever as bad as it seems in your head.
Once you know how you need to think about when. For example, if it’s a goal of improving your fitness you may want to set aside some time when you know you will be able to exercise. I find going through each of these steps makes me more likely to complete a task, compared to just having a big goal.
Remember to be realistic, nothing can be more crushing than setback after setback.
Keep it simple, even the most complex problem can be broken down into small steps which feel much more achievable.
If you have a setback, just get back on that horse as soon as possible, don’t wait around. If you make a mistake take it as an opportunity to reassess and adjust your plans so that you can avoid it in the future.
When you have finished a task from your list, cross it off. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing how far you have already come.
If you ever feel lost or you are starting to lose motivation, just think about the end result and why you are working so hard.
Have a positive attitude and be confident in what you are doing, others may focus on the downsides however you do not need to. Just remember that some things are out of your control; don’t waste your time worrying as it can be better spent elsewhere. Stay positive and believe you can do this.
Don’t let the setbacks define your journey, just keep thinking about what you have achieved so far and what you will have in the end.
